Understanding Cyberbullying
When words become weapons, silence becomes a wound.
In today’s connected world, the internet should be a place of learning, expression, and community. But for far too many young people, it's a space where bullying hides behind screens — and where silence can feel like the only option.
At Inspiring Futures Media, under our movement The Cost of Silence™, we shine a light on the emotional damage caused by cyberbullying — and give people the tools to speak up, stay safe, and support others.
What Is Cyberbullying?
Cyberbullying is when someone uses digital technology — like phones, social media, apps, games, or messaging — to deliberately hurt, harass, shame, or intimidate another person.
It includes:
Sending or sharing hurtful messages, images, or threats
Spreading rumours or lies online
Creating fake profiles to embarrass or humiliate
Excluding someone from group chats or online communities
Posting or sharing private information without consent
Unlike traditional bullying, cyberbullying doesn’t stop at the school gates — it follows young people home, into their rooms, and into their minds.
The Impact of Cyberbullying
Cyberbullying doesn’t just harm reputations — it harms lives.
Young people experiencing online abuse often face:
Anxiety, depression, and panic attacks
Shame, isolation, and low self-worth
Self-harm or suicidal thoughts
Academic problems and withdrawal from activities
Difficulty trusting others or speaking out
Many suffer in silence because they’re afraid of not being believed, having their devices taken away, or being blamed.
“It’s just online” is not an excuse. The pain is real. The silence is dangerous.”

Recognising the Signs
You may not always see the messages — but you can see the signs. A young person experiencing cyberbullying may:
Suddenly stop using devices or hide screens
Become withdrawn, anxious, or angry
Avoid school or social events
Show changes in sleep or appetite
Refuse to talk about what’s happening online
As a parent, teacher, or friend — trust your instincts. Ask questions gently. Listen without judgment. Let them know they are not alone.
How to Take Action
If you or someone you know is being cyberbullied:
Don’t respond or retaliate. It can escalate the abuse.
Screenshot everything. Save proof of messages, posts, or threats.
Block and report the abuser. Use the platform’s tools.
Tell someone you trust. A parent, teacher, or support worker.
Seek professional help. Emotional support is just as important as technical advice.
📱 Report to:
School safeguarding staff
Platform moderators (Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat, etc.)
